Chapter 15

Brynn

The next afternoon, Brynn made plans to have lunch with Lisa so she could fill her in on the details of her evening with Alec. They met at Dina’s Diner to get a little food in them while they shot the breeze.

After her big lasagne dinner the night before, Brynn had decided to just have a light salad for lunch. Lisa, meanwhile, was enjoying a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of French fries. Though she had decided to take it easy on lunch, Brynn still eyed the fries with a bit of envy.

Brynn told Lisa about her evening, mostly focusing on matters related to the case. She mentioned what Nicco had said about Lorenzo, and about the fight that Lorenzo and Jessie Miller had prior to Jerry’s murder. Brynn mentioned that Alec was going back to Le Cena Migliore that day to question Lorenzo.

“Do you think Lorenzo did it? Do you think he’s the murderer?” Lisa asked.

“I don’t know, but it’s certainly suspicious,” Brynn said.

“Hmm,” Lisa mumbled through a mouthful of French fries. “Well, enough about the case now. Tell me about your night with Alec. How did dinner go?”

Brynn smiled coyly but eventually regaled Lisa with her tale.

She talked about when Alec had grabbed her hand and about him following her home to keep her safe. Then, she mentioned that it seemed like Alec was going in for a kiss, which she would’ve happily accepted, but then Thunder and Versace spoiled the mood by fighting in the house. There was no kiss.

Lisa chuckled. “Dang, girl! Thunder and Versace are true killjoys, huh?”

Brynn laughed as she tried to take a bite of her salad.

“So, what’s next for you guys?” Lisa asked.

“What do you mean?” Brynn replied.

“You’re too smart to play dumb, hon. I want to know what’s next for you two.”

Before Brynn could answer, a man approached the table. Brynn didn’t realize who it was at first, but then it became clear: it was Will, the man from out of town that had expressed his love for the offerings at Brynn’s bakery.

This wasn’t the first time they had re-encountered each other since their first meeting, despite Will being a stranger in town.

“Man, Chesapeake Pointe is such a small town,” Will said with a smile.

“Who’s this?” Lisa asked, her eyes widening.

“Oh, this is Will. We met at Playing with Flour,” Brynn explained.

“I’m a big fan of her oatcakes,” Will said, smiling at Lisa.

Lisa smiled back.

“Why don’t you join us then, Will?” Brynn asked, gesturing for him to take a seat.

“Are you sure?” Will asked.

Brynn was going to answer, but before she could, Lisa jumped in to respond. “Absolutely. We’d love to have you take a seat. I always love meeting new people,” Lisa said.

Brynn knew that Lisa liked meeting new guys she found handsome. The latter wasn’t being subtle. Or maybe Brynn just found Lisa’s intentions so obvious because they knew each other so well.

Still, it was keeping Lisa from asking anymore probing questions about her and Alec’s relationship, so it was all good.
